Automotive design these days is dictated largely by passenger safety standards (small greenhouses), pedestrian safety standards (tall noses), and aerodynamics. Somewhere I read there was a reason the big Euros all have similar looking tail-ends, too - can't remember.
I wouldn't look to the 9-5 to distinguish itself on the outside. Where it really needs to catch up is on the inside. The 9-5 was a good competitor for '90s Euros on the interior (although by then it was too late) but it's really failed to keep up with its contemporaries. I think the new car will address those shortcomings.
Hopefully driving dynamics have been improved as well - the 9-5 has always been competent car, but there is room for improvement... Hopefully we see that too!
(Side note - I don't really see strong Camry or Suzuki resemblences anywhere. I do think it looks substantially like a Hyundai Azera, though. Heh.)
