In the 1940's and 1950's many American cars came from the factory with a 'manual throttle'. The 'manual throttle' was the cruise control of the period and was essential a knob on the dash that was attached to the carburetor linkage and allowed the driver to pull out the knob thus setting the engine speed.
After a few people managed to scare and kill themselves by accidentally bending the 'manual throttle' shaft and being unable to dis-engage the engine speed, the 'manual throttle' was removed from more modern cars.
