US Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (dated Aug. 2007).
This exhaustive report may provide a basis for when to replace tires based upon age and the various factors that can affect the tire's safe life.
I live in NJ and I follow the 6 year guideline; although typically I never make it past 3-4 years due to mileage and wear.
In 1967 I had a tire explode due to rubber deterioration after only 800 miles on a new 1967 Saab Model 96. Subsequently, US Royal insisted on replacing all of the tires free because of the aging condition. These tires looked like new. I would not think of pushing much past 5 years from the date of manufacture.
Tire deterioration due to age will not necessarily manifest itself in an obvious way. The exploding tire will get your attention though. Aged tires are known for sudden catastrophic failure with no warning.
