I think they just wanted to keep the story within the teardrop shape ur Saab model even though the factory racing continued with the 99 model.

Toward the end of the movie, I remember when it came out, that last of the line special edition blue metallic with Minilite rims and blue velvet-velour seats. Saw a few of them.

This kind of goes to show how much easier it was back then to be a small company and be able to keep essentially the same body structure for decades and still selling them, the 96 ran between 1960 to 1980.

Volvo being the same with the 444 and 544 model 1944-1965.

Now with all the voices that it HAS to be a new model every 4-5 years otherwise they have no interest in buying them.
The human spiral is just spinning faster and faster with the need of new things all the time.
