I have a '96 Audi A4 V6, which shares VW's B5 platform with that vintage Passat. A timing belt job is a BIG DEAL on these cars. Depending on how skilled you are, it can be a DIY job, but it's a lot of work and not very forgiving of errors. At a minimum, one must either remove the front end of the car (bumper, headlights, radiator, etc. or place the radiator/condenser in "service position" using long bolts. You will need specialized tools to line up/hold the camshafts, along with pullers to loosen the cogwheels from the camshafts, a pin to lock the crankshaft, a special tool to replace the seals of the secondary camshaft drive chains, etc. Also be sure to replace all seals, waterpump (OEM only!!!), idler pulley, tensioner, thermostat, etc. At a dealer this can be a $1500 job, less at an indy.
