Can you really tell the difference between 1080i & 1080p purely by the size of the monitor? I thought the primary difference you're getting is smoother frame transitions with 1080p (Progressive) vs 1080i (interlaced).
The idea being that the 1080p is the whole frame, top to bottom in one shot, vs displaying or scanning the odd lines and even lines (like NTSC TV was), so motion, particularly fast motion in action movies and sports, can appear smoother with a display that can handle 1080p.
As for HDMI vs component, there is one trick that HDMI does that component can't, and it's all because HDMI carries the digital audio with the video. HDMI can carry the whole Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio bitstreams for up to 7.1 surround sound to your AV Receiver for decoding in the receiver.
Component itself, doesn't carry any audio, and the only other way to get 5.1 or 7.1 Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio is from a Blu-ray Player that decodes it internally, and sends to the receiver via analog cables. The best you can get without HDMI is Dolby Digital via a coaxial or optical digital sound connection. That's up to 5.1 (Rt-Ctr-Lt; RtSurr-LtSurr; Sub), but it is rather heavily compressed, and if you've got the equipment, the difference is very noticeable.
