I've long thought that it made great sense for Saab to be spun off but still have a deal for platforms and even sharing many key parts. The economies of scale would make it work and Saab would still be around and could be made sufficiently unique. Left to do everything on its own would absolutely not work.

The really expensive part of engineering a car is the platform. So if you have a company (GM in this case) that has platforms which can be adapted to serve the requirements of multiple vehicles --a common industry practice-- then there's not much wrong with having GM involvement here provided it can be managed effectively and Saab still can operate independently.

Platforms can be modified in a number of ways, and it's really the stuff that gets bolted to the platform that distinguishes one car from another.
