The Pontiac Vibe is effectively a Toyota Matrix wearing different trim and badging. I have a sister-in-law and a co-worker who each own one of these vehicles. Today I got a peek at the 16 page Technical Service Bulletin detailing how to "fix" the stick throttle issue.
The official news reports describe the fix as "installation of a precisionion steel reinforcement" to the throttle pedal. After reading all 16 pages of the TSB, I scream "Hog Wash!"
It appears the Toyota designed throttle employs a proximity sensor in the accelerator assembly to determine throttle position. The repair involves insertion of a small piece of shim stock in the actuator mechanism as the target of the proximity sensor to correct out of tolerance conditions. Approximately a dozen different shims are available to the mechanics doing this job, each shim varying in thickness steps by only 0.20mm.
Note that I said insertion of a shim. There is no means to permantly affix these thin shims in position, they just freely sit upon a movable lever (accelerator pedal) which constantly changes position based upon driver input.
Maybe I am interpreting the TSB instructions incorrectly, but I have grave concerns regarding this repair technique.
