Work related question for the high tech guys out there.....
One of our company laptops has a problem with its Verizon broadband card shutting down after a few minutes of use. Naturally its the senior managing partner's laptop and I catch the complaint.
The laptop is a Dell Latitude D430 purchased 4/08 running Windows XP with a Dell installed Wireless 5720 Mobile Broadband mini card (EV-DO) for Verizon service. The laptop is set up so that the user connects with Verizon service through the Dell Wireless Manager, clicks on our VPN connection and opens Outlook for email.
User complains that after receiving and sending a few emails, he loses the Verizon connection, forcing him to shut down and restart the Verizon/VPN/Outlook. This is a recently developed problem. I am aware that Apple/ATT broadband setups are programmed to sense a nearby WIFI hotspot and encourage the user (by dropping the Broadband link) to link to that WIFI signal instead of the broadband connection to save AT&T's system capacity. Has Verizon done the same thing recently via a systems setting download? Just in case this is the cause, I disabled the WiFi sensing icon, but don't know yet if it resets on the next startup or solves the broadband loss problem.
Or is this loss of Verizon signal due to some internal Outlook setting that can be altered? Suggestions on website wireless forums were to click on the Venturi Compression Icon ( a small tornado icon) and disble it, but user does not have that icon on his startup page. Others suggested checking Outlook settings to confirm that Outlook is not set to "Shutdown service after sending", but I have not got back to the user's machine to check that.
Any other ideas, suggestions? Even our third party IT consultant is stumped by this.....
Thanks in advance.
