I've had people see our four Saab family and think we're a little nuts. I get comments like, "Saabs are expensive to own," or Saabs aren't very reliable. Why you have four?"

Well, expensive compared to what? I find them pretty much the same as other cars. Reliable? Well, they don't break down much if you maintain them. I explain gently (and with some enthusiasm) that in 26 years of owning Saabs we have not found these assumptions to be true. And with the exception of the '84 C900 that we had for 20 years, all were bought used, with at least 90K on them.

I haven't found many people who've had trouble with Saabs if they have maintained the car at least by the book and used a good Saab indy. The people I've run into who did have trouble, when I ask them a few questions, usually turn out to be of the minimal maintenance mentality or clearly just got a bad car and/or were treated shabbily by their dealer.

Even my youngest daughter who was very vocal about NOT wanting a Saab as her first car, fell in love with the '99 9-3 we got for her to use. And has found it to be considered the coolest car among all her friends' rides.
