That depends...
Some gauges are wired in such a way that the needle pegs full scale if the sender is disconnected.
Others are wired that the needle doesn't move if the sender is disconnected. These also may go full scale if the sender wire becomes disconnected, and grounds itself to the engine block or body.
Best to find someone familiar with your particular make and model of truck to troubleshoot it.
