I would be curious as to the comparison between walking and driving by time. In a modern car you are in an airbag padded steel cage whereas walking you're basically unprotected.

Just hemmin' and hawin', I would still think walking to work for an hour a day might get you into more strains, sprains, colds, animals and general hazards including weather that you miss driving a "cage" as we bikers call 'em the same hour a day. In other words being a pedestrian is pretty dangerous IMHO. I suppose it does depend on urban vs country livin', but again the country with all the remoteness and wildness has it's own set of hazards and in the city you can get mugged and run over. Hmmmmm......

I'm thinkin' by time you walk 3 mph and you drive say 60 mph so you get 20 times as far driving in an hour so if they were relatively equal danger time wise it's 20 times safer by the mile to drive, but I suspect walking by time is much more dangerous not equally. Also you don't compare driving and walking by time unless you're measuring recreation instead of transportation, which is the largest purpose of either. Either can be done just for recreation, but again I'm reminded, recreational walking will tear you up pretty frequently, hiking for example. Hmmmmm.....
