Retro has been very successful and the Mini Cooper is a prime example. It's changed very little since it's inception and yet demand for both new and used Mini's has stayed strong. If I read them right Spyker, unlike GM, has realized that Saabs are a niche car (like the Mini) and their plan is to make that work. Almost everyone on this board has complained about the "homgenizing" of Saab by GM, how they're no longer distinctive. Well finally someone is going to do something about it. The beauty of retro cars is they don't need constant change for the sake of change to compete. If you want a retro Saab or Mini the only place to get one is from Saab or Mini. They're what I call an "evergreen" they just sell year after year (think Jeep Wrangler, Morgan, 911, etc.) with very little in the way of R&D. I don't want to see all Saabs be retro, but they need at least one car that will generate buzz and waiting lists, a car that they can sell for close to list price (like Minis the first few years they were out). Why go head to head against the Corolla and Civic when you can instead sell something unique that no one else has. There's a reason so many manufacturers have come up with retro cars and that's because it's profitable. Why shouldn't Saab take advantage of the enthusiasm people have for it's past products? They haven't built a C900 for 17 years and look at the following they still have. For Saab to survive they're going to have to play every card in their hand.
