Do they have pump curves or data sheets available (maybe at the maunfacturer's web site) to detail flow and pressure capabilities of the two pumps? I assume a pond pump needs high flow at low head (low pressure) and the ability to pass small solids.
Excessive pressure would result in a narrow fast moving stream of water (like a garden hose) rather than a slow flowing cascade of gurgling water. A utility pump may be designed towards higher head without any solids handling capability.
