I've mentioned countless time how my 1996 Corolla was the best car I've ever owned in regards to reliability. It was uncomfortable, but man was it reliable. In the 180k that we had it, the only non-maintenance item that needed to be worked on was the starter contacts (a $15 fix). Operating costs were very, very low. If we had purchased the Camry instead of the Corolla, I suspect we would still be driving it. We simply sold the Corolla because it was just getting too small for us.
However, in the attempts to be the largest manufacturer, Toyota lost their focus on quality recently. Sitting inside a new Camry shows that they have focus on cost-cutting, not maintaining a reliable or durable product. The fit and finish is embarrassing. The only Toyota product that retains Toyota's quality standards of the past is the Land Cruiser.
I have to give credit to Honda for focusing on quality over quantity. The quality difference between an Accord and Camry are quite noticeable.
