You may be right, that with careful enough maintenance, it is at most a minor concern. That said, many here have read Townsend's diatribe re his experiences switching his customers to Merc coolant. That was all it took for me (unfortunately I read this after my first wrecked headgasket in the notorious 2.1L). He claims to have experienced better lifetimes on many parts in the cooling system, in addition to a drastically reduced HG failure rate. For an almost insignificant difference in maintenance cost, + minor extra effort to source, I figure it's worth it...

We're really fortunate here to be able to get great advice from a bunch of mechanics who make a living being mechanics. Whether it's old Townsend posts + his site, or Anders (eg his great post re pcv system measurements), or John Myers (amusing rants + all), just wanted to say thanks... advice that comes from dealing with statistical numbers of these cars is hugely invaluable, and otherwise largely unavailable to the diy world!
