There's 3 sensors inside distributor, CYP, CKP, & TDC. (CKP = crank position.) The official story is they're not replacable, so you have to buy a new distributor. People have dismantled it, but there's a risk of destroying the other sensors, & then where do you find replacements?
These 3 sensors send their signals to the ECU which then turns around & sends a signal back to the ignitor to fire the coil. A bad ignitor or a bad coil would not throw the CKP code. Resistance is one way to check that, but watching the signal on an oscilloscope would be the difinitive test.
Check the wiring harness plug for the distributor. (loose/corroded/broken?) I think the positive signal wire for each of those 3 sensors is shielded, so be careful when pulling wires apart. I don't have the ECU pin-out for a Civic, only for a 95 Integra (used to own one). I think these circuits also go through a big connector near the left shock-tower. Try http://www dot hondacivicforum dot c.o.m maybe you can find a pinout.
