Apple Care is MORE than just replacing parts. It's also about free phone support past the first 90 days (see graphic).
The standard warranty is 1 year parts and labor, with 90 days phone support. After the first 90 days, if you call them with a problem, they take your credit card # before they talk to you. If it turns out to be their problem, you don't pay. But if not, you get to pay Apple a fee. I forget if it is hourly or per incident.
Apple Care extends the warranty out to a full three years (except iPhone, iPod, iPad & AppleTV, where it's two years) from date of purchase for parts & labor AND phone support.
So take that into consideration as well.
