C320 would be a fine choice.
A 1996+ E-klasse (W210) would be even better. They are quite reliable, with several maintenance areas that come up once in a while but no bad issues like oil sludge, etc. Really early European market cars has some paint issues due to switching to water-based pain but that was resolved by the time they came to North America.
The car is very comfortable and very roomy. Much better long trip car than a C-klasse, IMHO. The trunk is positively enormous and if that is not enough you can get a wagon, although non-4MATIC ones are rare in the States. Do NOT get 4MATIC -- it makes everything much worse.
If you can swing it, try to find a diesel. There have been some important changes from 1996 to 1997 to 1998 diesels, so do your research.
If you go with an older E-klasse (W124), keep in mind that in last two or three model years all of them have a biodegradable wiring harness that causes major problems, unless completely replaced at a fairly high cost. The older E-klasse is also an excellent choice but if you find a 1994-1995 car, make sure there is documentation about changing the wiring harness. Otherwise, budget an additional $1500 for that.
Another good choice would be an older Infinity M45 (2003-04). It is often overlooked for no good reason and is within your budget. Awesome car -- roomy, quiet, comfortable and extremely powerful. Trunk is not that big, however, but similar to C-klasse.
