IIRC - The ignition is there to keep it from penetrating your kneecap in a crash and to directly lock the transmission. Also, that is part of the DCA (driver control area, as in passengers are not to mess with the DCA!). So having it there seems natural to me (only on my 2nd & 3rd Saabs).
As for using your car like a mobile diner, I have more objections to putting the dash cupholder over the radio (huh?). I don't use the cupholder in the armrest.
