Think about how you'll use the boat

Where are you, like around Tappan Zee? Further upriver or closer to NYC? Location affects (and decides) how you'll use the boat. If you want a boat to cruise and stay overnight on every so often, the Catalina is a nice little boat. But if all you want or are likely to do is day sail, you might be better off in something like a Sonar: big cockpit, 23' fin keel and a planing hull.
Another thought is to moor the boat in a place where you can do more with it, and drive to the boat on weekends. When I was a charter and delivery captain I had several boats under contract from people who came down on weekends to sail. Sort of like driving to a vacation house.
Whatever boat you pick, get it surveyed, especially if it's a cruising boat. All boats (like cars) have histories and surveys will show some of what's happened to the boat in the past 31 seasons. Boats that have been raced can have problems cruisers don't, but cruisers have their own set of issues. Like Dave notes, a freshwater boat is generally better to get than a salt water boat. The standing rigging is very important. Have the sails looked at by a sailmaker, too. Plumbing, through-hulls, electrics, all fittings, winches, keel bolts, the list goes on. Lots to look at.
But sailing is one of the great pleasures of life.
