LED-illuminated LCD TVs Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Sun, 5 Dec 2010 16:27:30 In Reply to: More HDTV questions: LED & Streaming, OKSaabs, Sat, 4 Dec 2010 13:26:07 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
In general, LED-illuminated TVs are simpler and cheaper to manufacture, so the general price premium baffles me. "Normal" LCD TVs are illuminated by small fluorescent tubes, which require an "inverter" circuit to provide the high voltage that is needed to run any fluorescent lamp. I have repaired at least a dozen LCD TVs and displays, the inverter circuit is the usual cause of failure (specifically the cheap capacitors typically used). Unless the LEDs used in LED-illuminated TVs are quite pricey vs. fluorescent lamps, and/or they use a large quantity of them, I don't see why they should cost more than fluorescent-illuminated LCD TVs. Along with what appears to be a simpler design, the manufacturers should be able to count on lower warranty costs, less shipping damage, etc., which should actually lower the price that they charge.
Is this worth $200? Well, if the colors are better, perhaps, and new is new, which typically adds a premium. I think that you can also expect a more durable product with LED-illumination.
