The original 900 formula really works:
1. a mid-size foot print, about 185-190 inches in length;
2. sloping hatch in the back for big cargo opening (as you mentioned), and the ability to utilize the entire floor space behind the driver's seat to the rear bumper;
3. a somewhat higher ground clearance without raising the car too much
The automotive industry is trying, with products like the FX, X6, Accord Crosstourer, Venza etc. The X6 and Accord Crosstourer have apparently gone off the deep end in terms of garish styling. It's going to take some time. Those cartoonish bugbears with higher price tags than sedan counterparts will help change people's perception that hatchbacks are the cheapest in the lineup . . . after that the manufacturers will be able to market midsize to big hatchbacks with more normal styling, without having to market it as discount bin product (the discount bin image was what historically killed both consumer appetite and manufacturer profitability on hatchbacks).
BTW, the Infiiti FX is quite good handling and significantly less expensive than the Cayenne, which in the 2nd generation has ditched all the off-load prowess pretense. Ironically, the Japanese lux makers had the SUV formula correct right off the bat with the RX and FX; whereas some of the Germans had to do-over in the 2nd generation ML and Cayenne to catch up. Competition is good. Now, could someone lower those jacked up lux hatchbacks down a bit without sacrificing too much ground clearance please.
