Japanese cars tend to have short seat cushions that aren't angled or shaped to my liking, lack thigh support, have lumbar support in the wrong place, and have those stupid, cheap seat-back adjustment levers that have only 4 or 5 positions, none of which are quite right. What is up with that? They don't know how to make a geared wheel? The best Japanese seats I've been in have been in Nissans. Yotas, Subies and now Hondas all fail the over-30 minutes test. DK about Mazda. Haven't driven one in a long time.
Maybe cars with 8-way electrically adjustable seats are better, but the standard issue seats in Japanese cars are almost universally uncomfortable for me. I'm 6'2", 205 pounds with a 34" inseam. Not usual in any way.
I think part of it is that the average Japanese male is a lot smaller than me in every dimension, so the cars are built for that size person. The other part is that maybe Japanese car makers just don't "get" seating comfort. Maybe people don't drive long distances in Japan. And because most people even here in the U.S. don't realize how comfortable good car seats can be, they accept back and leg pain as being normal on a long trip.
In our Saabs I can literally go for 10-12 hours and be OK. Stiff from sitting, maybe, but not in pain. Somehow I don't think that's an unreasonable expectation.
