Re: Learning a 2nd language..... Posted by Osvensk [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Learning a 2nd language....., GFW3pedals ![]() |
Perhaps I'm the one to answer this inquiry even though I no longer own a SAAB (they've all been handed down to the kids), since I am a retired Latin professor. Language theory affirms that the real language is the spoken word and written representations of it are secondary, and our ancestors spoke in sophisticated ways for at least 100,000 years before writing appeared. The early Jesuit missionaries in Canada who recorded the Native American languages of the area marveled at how sophisticated they were, in spite of the lack of written documents ("more precise noun forms than Latin and subtler verb forms than Greek"). Nevertheless, you have to begin with some image to show what is meant, and that would require a visual aspect to look at, during which you don't want to be driving.
The important distinction here is that language learning just begins with the mastery of the vocabulary and structure rules, but then requires transfering that knowledge into HABITS and REFLEXES, so you need to begin by studying some form of text, whether of words or pictures, during which you wouldn't dare be driving, but once you've passed that stage, you've only got 10% of the process done. The remainin 90% is repetitive drilling practice which can easily be done from tapes or disks while driving.
