My wife traded her '02 9-5 for a 2010 Prius, now with 35,000 miles on it. The up-front cost is more, but it's been absolutely flawless so far as far as upkeep. Probably the gas savings pays for the hybrid system in about 100,000 miles, I would guess. A used one might be a better return.
Real world mpg for us has been about 48 for those miles, but the car varies more by situation than anything I've ever driven. Short trips in winter yield terrible mileage as the hybrid system doesn't really contribute much until the engine is warm. For extended use in the suburbs, where you drive distances at 40-50 mph, it would probably average 60; it's not so great for small towns and highways (which is what we use it for) as both of those eat into the average. Personal record is 63 mpg: about 200 miles at 73 mph on the interstate riding a strong south wind.
