I test drove one during "Cash for Clunkers" Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Wed, 6 Apr 2011 10:11:03 In Reply to: True, No Snaab, Wed, 6 Apr 2011 07:39:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Many of the attributes previously mentioned by others also appealed to me; also one of my first cars was a Volvo 142S, and I was lusting for a P1800 during the entire time I owned it!
Performance was not remarkable, my slightly tweaked 9000 FEELS faster (it may not be) and the load capacity and usability of the hatch on the C30 was somewhat lacking. I like the somewhat stark interior and cloth seats, especially some of the optional tweaks that can be made such as a real bent plywood center console (I'm a huge Eames fan), etc. In fact, there is a lot of personalization possible, but its pricey, must be ordered from the factory, and has a long lead time - this was one of the ways that Volvo intended to compete with Mini.
The large Volvo dealer I visited had only two cars, both automatics (I prefer manual trans), and was not willing to move very far on price (recall the typical price gouging scenario when I was looking during the "CFC" program). When I asked about leasing, they calculated a value, but strongly recommended against it as the projected residual value was quite low (translating to high monthly payments) - which may be a good thing if someone is looking to pick one up used.
At the time, my 9000 manual had a dying transmission and was a good candidate for disposal, but since it is a manual transmission car, did not qualify for the CFC program (automatics did). Not enough interest for me to buy a C30 at that time, but now that you are reminding me, perhaps I'll take a look at used prices.
