I've been to Alaska seven times but my last trip was in 1999 so I have no current hotel / lodging / restaurant tips.

Concur with going down the Kenai but would do a long daytrip to Homer for some fresh fish and concentrate heading down towards Seward. In Seward you can take a boat tour of Kenai Fjords and hike up / fall down a mountain on which they have a foot race on the 4th of July.

If you want to do a loop, get the ferry out of Whittier to Valdez and 'cruise' past Columbia Glacier to Prince William Sound. The ride up and out of Valdez is beautiful but it's a longway back to Anchorage.

Denali is also spectacular especially if the mountain is out (and it may not be). Take the bus from the park entrance out to Wonder Lake and try to get the earliest bus you can for the wildlife. I did a Denali flight see out of Talkeetna. Not cheap but it was worth every penny.

As for lodging, your tent should be your hotel. Hotels are far and few between and absurdly expensive. You can always buy a shower along the road. And be sure to buy mosquito repellant. They're hungry in June. We always stopped at Fred Meyer out in the Wasilla / Palmer area to stock up on provisions.

Important: Don't walk on tidal flats in the Cook Inlet as you leave Anchorage and head towards the Kenai. The silt will trap you and you will be unable to extracate yourself before the tide comes in. Even the fire department is of little use in those situations. Really. Ditto for a lot of the silt below glaciers -- you can get stuck.
