You need a .44 Magnum or better to stop a black bear. A Grizzly? Forget it. Just hope they recover the bigger pieces so they can fill the coffin.

And forget the shotgun nonsense. It'll be ineffective unless the black bear is very close to you and decides to make it a faior fight by exposing his soft belly to you. An unlikely scenario, etc.

Anyway, with the adrenalin rush inherent in a bear attack, you'll be lucky to get off one accurate shot and you'll want that shot to kill so you'll need a high kinetic energy round since you have to penetrate lots of fat and muscle to get to the internal organs. Again, go with a .44 Magnum or larger. Your local gun shop should have decent recommendations.

Oh, and make it a revolver so all you have to do is cock the hammer and pull the trigger. Auto feed magazines might jam in crunch time. And don't forget to practice beforehand. The time to learn how to fire your weapon accurately is not when the bear is closing on you in a 30 mph sprint.
