The cameras were turned on because Arizona has one of the highest, if not he highest fatality rate of highway deaths in the country. In fact we have some of the best weather condtions. Az drivers think they have a right to drive at 70-85 miles per hour everywhere all the time, especially when driving Dodge pickups hauling ATV's.
The state often under-reports highway deaths and the right number is much higher than reported. All of this go back to pre- 1974 and the "safe and reasonable" non-speed limits of the west. All of this has to do with " my states rights" mind set. If you have been at the scene of some of these fatal crashes, as I have, you wouldn't think turning off the cameras is a good idea. But hey it's not all bad out here, you get to carry your handgun under your belt while you are doing 80 as well. Ya-hoo!
