I avoid it due to traffic snarls Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Woodward Dream Cruise, No Snaab, Thu, 28 Jul 2011 15:45:29 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
From 2000 thru 2008 I worked in offices that were badly affected by Dream Cruise traffic. We could barely get to work, or home from work, for an entire week each year because of all the traffic on Woodward Avenue.
That being said, you can do both of what you mentioned. Many folks just watch from lawn chairs set close to the street - but you may have to rent chair space (I'm not kidding, free parking disappears for this event and most lawn space is rented out to clubs and car displays) Others drive in the multi-lane traffic jam for hours, honking their horns, playing their music, waving to drivers/occupants of similar (or not) cars. Basically just having lots of fun going nowhere very slowly.
It all depends on what you like to do. My former boss has a lot of classics/hot rods and drives them all in the event. He in one, his wife in another, with a different pair of cars each night.
Many (too many IMHO) of the cars are current model SUVs, trucks, and other popular vechicles. You don't need a classic or hot rod, if it runs you can drive it.
Check out the Thurday Night Car Shows in Ypsilanti's Depot Town each week from Memorial Day thru Labor Day. An electic mix of automobiles and lots of good food in all the restaurants/bars in the Depot Town neighborhood. Ypsi is my home town and Depot Town has the last remaining Hudson Dealership in the US (world?), as well as an Automobile Museum, Fire Truck Museum, and the slightly famous Ypsilanti Garage where the late David E Davis Jr and his friends stored their car collections.
The Ann Arbor Rolling Sculpture Car Show is also a good time. This year they had a lot of Morgans being displayed.
