Spending the week in New Haven, CT Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Thu, 4 Aug 2011 17:34:12 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My wife and I were a bit nervous before the trip. It seems the common consensus regarding New Haven is that Yale is a beautiful campus set in the middle of a war zone. Our youngest just got a job working for Yale and we assisted with his move from Boston (Somerville actually) to New Haven.
I guess we are battle hardened by living only 35 miles from Detroit. The town is far better than I had feared, and although we have driven thru a few sections of town that I would not want to revisit at night, we haven't found anywhere we felt uncomfortable during daylight hours. And yes, we have both driven thru and walked thru what passes as the "hood" in New Haven
All the one way streets are no fun, lane lines are merely a suggestion (lucky for me since I basically have no idea where I am going and seem to always be in the wrong lane), and painted parking stalls have no significance at all. Why park in a marked stall when you can park in the drive lane and save yourself 6 steps? Geesh!
Gas prices here are sky high! I paid over $4.50/gallon for premium at the last fill-up compared to $3.89/gallon when I filled up in Michigan before the trip.
We ate at Pepe's. Not bad, but I prefer Detroit style pizza (see Wikipedia for the definition of Detroit pizza. No, Detroit pizza is not Little Cesars or Dominos).
Bottom line. Don't believe the bad hype regarding New Haven if you have a child, grandchild, niece, or nephew who wants to attend Yale. It is no where near as bad as the stories make it sound.
