In general, I tend to agree with you... But the e30 BMW is iconic. I say that as a three-time (including currently) owner.
Not all of them fall into that category. A 318 with an automatic is entirely forgettable, but a 325iS or 318iS with the suspension improvements, seats, and a stick shift is thoroughly enjoyable... more so than any Saab I've driven, which is a lot. Not that the C900, 9000, and other Saab models don't hit different sweet spots (I sold a 325iS to get a 9000 Aero because of the Aero's advantages... space and speed, while giving up the BMW's advantages... handling, road feel, and tight shifting)
The other cars on the list seem ho-hum. A properly looked after e30 is a marvel. Much like a C900T, or 9000 Aero (Other cars I've owned and driven). The e30 just seemed to hit a sweet spot that hasn't been hit since.
