Ironically, I 1st knew while working on the Saab Posted by Notnoel [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: That's funny!, Noel, Wed, 5 Oct 2011 06:46:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
As you know this comes on slowly, almost imperceptibly. When it first comes on, you gradually and subconsciously compensate. You start holding the paper in your lap not because it is only in focus that way, but just because it seems more comfortable.
Then, suddenly the flash of realization sinks in - a thunderbolt moment where you suddenly realize, *&^%!, I am going blind! For me the "Oh sh-t" moment was while replacing the catalytic converter on the Saab. I was laying on my back with the car on ramps, trying to thread the bolt onto the nut that was 6-8 inches from my face and I realized I couldn't focus.
Unable to pull back to gain focus, I was suddenly stricken by this first great reminder of our mortality. I think it was even worse than beginning to lose my hair in my late 20s and 30s - knew from family history that that was at least a 50-50 shot. Since that showed up when I was still in my 20s I some how bought off on the idea that it had little to with "getting old". But having to wear glasses after 40 some-odd years of better than aver age vision, that just sucked!
As Mick Jagger famously sang, "what a drag it is getting old." Que sera sera.
