sounds like the original 4 wav files are on slightly different timebases, ie either a sample rate variation (if the recording time is long, a small error can build up) or especially if the Tascam was analog, tape speed variation (most likely during the ADC capture of the individual wav files). If the Tascam is digital, and you have access to it, and you have the right hardware, try doing a digital transfer... would save a lot of hassle + sound better...
A constant relative time domain stretch is pretty easy to correct (even manually with the individual wav files if you can at least sample rate convert). Time varying time stretch requires more knowledge +/or the right plugin if there isn't a decent time stretch algo in Audacity... unfortunately, in the case of an analog recorder, that is probably what you are up against!
