I think shops may charge more if insurance is paying, sorta like body shops do.
So...
It's worth shopping a bit if you are paying for it. One way to do this is ask your local dealer (or your indy) whom they recommend. Dealers always have a contractor do this, and they don't want comebacks so they pick a good company. That's what I did when I was paying.
I had the windshield replaced on my '96 9K about 4 years ago here in NH. It was pitted and dangerous at night so I paid it out of pocket. Cost $188, done in my driveway. They used Pilkington glass, which is an OEM supplier.
Same car, 3 months ago in SoCal while daughter had car. Rock hit it on freeway, chipped it and a few weeks later it expanded into a crack.
Insurance covered it, and the bill was something like $485. Done by Safelite at her office. Used some brand of glass I've never heard of, but seems fine so far (car is now back home). Looks as if they might have put in a new gasket... I don't have the RO handy to look at.
Whatever you do, new glass makes the whole car feel newer!
