We love our '02 9-5. We are going to watch how things turn out in the next few months, keeping in contact with Atomic Auto to see how the parts situation goes.

I've been looking, however. Our major criteria are safety (which is a reason we bought the 9-5) a strong dealer network, reliability and a measure of luxury, but there are other considerations, too. Cost is an object & we'll probably buy something a couple years old. Reliability is a biggie because we are in the west and want to travel, which means being 200-400 miles from a major city.

Crash tests aren't very useful because they don't have a way to assess how things work out when a 3,500 pound car hits a 2,500 pounder. We know the folks in the lighter car are worse off and we don't need crash tests to tell us that. I found a website that does about as good a job of assessing safety, but nothing is perfect: http://www.informedforlife.org/
Their ratings showed the Audi A4 as one of the safest cars, but they have about the same number of dealers as Saab. Surprisingly, the Volvo S80 is about #34 on their list of about 500 cars, beaten out by a bunch of SUV''s and a Hyundai Genesis.

For reliability I am considering a Toyota Avalon, because it's a Toyota! Lots of dealers. #21 on the safety list.

For 2010, the Subaru Legacy came high on the safety list, but somehow a Subaru doesn't excite me. We'll look at it.

The S80 for luxury and a little for safety, but doesn't hit the reliability thing very well.

Those are my thoughts at this time.
