I don't think you can boot a disk (external) as a bootcamp disk. It would also be a little more complicated than that since there is a restore partition on the HD....how to extract that, I don't know. It was more of a legal question. I think I'm technically in the clear.
I actually was considering VMware Fusion, but don't have the 2GB of RAM needed and for other reasons can't acquire/install it right now. Besides, the course he's taking is introductory in Windows and I'm sure the idea of virtualization would confuse him... I can always delete the Bootcamp partition.
As for installing Windows and upgrading it, I believe they allow you to do a clean install with the upgrade for the sole reason to avoid having to do two installs...if you already happen to own a licence, which is my original question. Again, I think I'm in the clear. All I did was install the upgrade (which is technically a full version, just not in legal terms), used the product key and presto.
