I am a safety geek which is why I have bought 15 Saabs. I really try hard to keep up with all of the safety sites and somehow I have missed this one called informedforlife.org.
Richard Scott made a reference to this site on a recent post and I want to give him credit (and thanks) for bringing the site to my attention.
It really has a very good program for more adequately predicting the crashworthiness of a vehicle because it takes into account the car's weight (which both IIHS and NHTSA don't) when accessing crashworthiness.
It's main drawback is that if either IIHS and NHTSA data are missing it puts in an average number for their values which can really skew the overall result. But if you are able to look for proxy results elsewhere (from similar cars) and plug them in then you can really get a more accurate picture of the overall safety.
For example my 2011 9-5 turbo premium gets a much better (and more accurate score) by plugging in missing data from a Buick Lacrosse. When I do that I get a score in the low 40's (anything lower than a 55 is a recommended vehicle). A LaCrosse score of 43 put it in the top 6% of all 2010-2011 cars so that would put a 2011 9-5 in the 5% range at least.
Richard thanks again for your post. I would point out that the Volvo you mentioned was missing data and thus got average scores when it probably should not have and thus got a lower ranking than it deserved.
