Was GM going moribund really news? When a big company is becoming moribund, are its employees, shareholders, and business counter-parties in a better place to know about it, or are innocent bystander taxpayers who are not even doing business with it? GM going out of business was not exactly an "act of God" like astroid strike. It was gradually losing market share and going out business for decades (it almost did in the early 90's). Whose fault is it if someone hang all their nest eggs in the known broken basket?
More importantly, in real life, each individual person undertakes purposeful actions because they can think for themselves. They are not random Brownian dots in a high school science project. Bailing out institutions because they are "too big too fail" would only provide the perverse incentive to make those institutions even bigger! There is always risk in dealing with any counter-party in business. If big institutions have a high probability of being bailed out (because they are "too big to fail"), the payoff matrix becomes very tilted in favor of the very same big institutions that are too big for its left hand to know what its right hand is doing, and too complacent to adapt to changes in the market place. That, my friend, is how an economy goes down the toilet, causing mass unemployment / pretend-employment.
