Back in the late 1960s, I had a FIAT 600D with a slightly Abarthized motor and it was the best handling car by far in the rear-engine class; in fact I have a few pictures of me following or leading various 3 cylinder SAABs through corners, which are a perfect way to illustrate the difference between understeer and oversteer. Those with deep pockets, like Jerry Hanson, however, had just discovered that they could bolt one of the V6 motors from various German Fords in place of the V4s in SAABs, and they were very fast, although if you hit the brakes hard on dry pavement, they would do a rear wheel wheelie sometimes. Jerry had a Sonnett so converted, and later he had a big wing mounted high above the hood, like CanAm cars of the era, but with the wing in the front.
