Harbor Freight battery maintainer Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Fri, 25 May 2012 08:22:56 In Reply to: Re: Best battery for a seldom used car?, saabsince 93b [Profile/Gallery] , Fri, 25 May 2012 06:48:31 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Harbor Freight sells a battery tender type product that periodically goes on sale for $20. I bought a few of these last year, I keep one on the garden tractor over the winter and use them on a couple of seldom-used cars. I also have a friend who uses one on his motorcycle. So far they're working out great.
In fact I checked and it's on sale for $19.99 now, their item #99857 "1.5 Amp Three-Stage Onboard Battery Charger/Maintainer."
A couple of things to be aware of -- it comes with lugs to attach permanently to the battery terminals. (I replaced these with alligator clips.) If you do leave it permanently installed, when unplugged from the mains it leaves an LED on which over time will discharge the battery. I would probably put a disconnect on the ground wire in such cases.
