You'll often hear them referred to as circuit protected harnesses and they work pretty much how you would expect, they're wired directly to the battery and the tow vehicles wiring activates relays (I assume) to power the trailer lights. They're good if you're towing a trailer with lots of lighting, and they supposedly help prevent "burned out bulb" warnings on cars with that feature (I can't vouch for their effectiveness there).
If you're just towing something with the standard tail/brake/turn lights I really wouldn't worry about it. A lot of new trailers have LED lights too now which draw only a tiny amount of current. If your tow vehicle has separate brake and indicator lights you'll still need an adapter for that, so they're not screwing you there.
