I'll give you injection timing - I don't know much about the new tech stuff - but I can assure you I'm right about why diesels can't rev high. Sure, big diesels don't rev because they're big and heavy - that applies to big gas engines too - but unlike spark ignition the compression ignition process has an RPM above which it just isn't going to make good power, around 4500 or 5000 rpm I think. The colloquial expression is that the piston outruns the combustion. That's why gas engines advance their ignition curve as they rev, to start the ignition process (which has a fixed speed) earlier in the piston's up stroke. With the compression combustion process you just can't advance the timing of ignition, hence a maximum limit to producing power.
