Thank you all for your help. You've all touched on my basic fear here and that is touching an element that has not dissipated even after it has been unplugged for some time.
The flip side, I suspect, is that if these kits are labeled correctly much of the danger is gone b/c the danger is basically removed assuming it's just soldering everything correctly, then plugging in and it works out of the gate. My main concern would be with having to troubleshoot a system. The more I think about it the more I'm inclined to work on the Jonokuchi Amp that's available online. (http://www.pmillett.com/Jonokuchi.htm). It appears to offer the most basic design and performance for what I'm looking for. A unit to drive small speakers at work. Sadly, I'm sure I could just buy an integrated circuit/tube amp online for about the same as what I'm looking to spend. But there is something about giving this project at try that I can't avoid.
Thank you all for you help.
