Those are pretty common in the US. Most rural routes are done by independent contractors as well as stuff hauled by semi between cities. In fairness to the postal service, I can't think of any times in the last 40 years something I've sent didn't arrive. If something sent to me didn't get there I'm unaware of it--not too bad a record.
