Noel,
As a Californian (though one who lives on the edge of snow country and summer and winter wheels), I too hand wash in nice weather and use the DIY pressure wash bays in the poor weather.
Summer: Hand wash only.
Winter: Pressure wash first, making sure to clean the grit from wheel wells and undercarriage, then I usually make time to hand wash the car... only if the forecast is dry for a few days.
Unfortunately, this winter has been very dry since Christmas. The snows were really only needed a few days. Put my summer wheels back on last weekend. (I'm hoping that'll make it snow one more time!)
Cheers,
~P
