I think this is true no matter what the title. You can have a car that was totally wrecked and rebuilt and never salvaged just as easily as you can have a car that sustained a parking lot ding get totalled out. Salvage titles only occur when someone makes an insurance claim - if your son puts your Camry into a tree and you and your friend pull it back out with a come-along, you'll have a wrecked car with a clean title. If your 1985 Volvo gets lightly sideswiped by a white van in a parking lot and sustains $3000 worth of paint damage, your insurance will total it out and you'll have a salvage title (speaking from experience, there).
When you buy a car, you need to inspect it for damage regardless of what the title says. Check structure, check airbag functionality, check everything you reasonably can. The only things the condition of the title *inherently* causes are future resale & insurance claim problems.
