That is awesome resale on the Wrangler - almost makes buying a new car an investment! Good choice!
Probably most of the time when someone faces a $3-4k problem with an older car, it gets ditched (especially if the car is worth less than that)... fortunately those kinds of problems are pretty infrequent. I've never gone over $3k on a repair. I forget what it cost for my indy to swap in a new tranny in a c900, but it wasn't that much. Ditto for the hg in the same car also by my indy. The second HG/burnt valve at a different indy cost $1200... those were the only really big bills I've had... that car used to be expensive until I became more knowledgeable and did some repairs myself... I still take brake lines etc to my indy. But a $250/m lease is the same as $3000/y, so it's like assuming you're going to get a $3k repair once every year! That said, there is value in knowing it will just get taken care of if something goes wrong... so I see your point... but most of the time, for an educated buyer, buying used is the cheapest option overall...
