I thought the steel bars in the doors were to meet a side impact standard in the USA? maybe I am wrong... but those, and the ones in the 9000 are not sufficient to guard against SUV side impacts - they are too low... that is why the 9-5's folding B pillar was introduced. There used to be a youtube video of Saab testing the 9000 by smashing a Range Rover into the passenger side front and it would have killed the occupant... the 9000 was the safest car on the road at the time by a long shot. Be very careful in intersections in an older car!
Most of the c900 safety cage is pretty primitive/standard when compared to modern cars, but it probably still exceeds some modern cars in some respects even if it falls under grade in other areas... but remember, a c900 is 30+ years old now! these were remarkably safe for their time - the differences back then were staggering! Saab worked hard to make these cars as safe as they could.
That said, the really strong A pillar will help. Any rust in the wrong places will un-help... so it depends a bit on the condition of the car.
When I last looked at real life safety data, the c900 was still fairing well. But there are many factors involved and now the number of c900's on the road make it impossible to gauge anymore...
